Shanghai University for International Students: Admission, Programmes and Tuition

Shanghai University for international students: key facts, campuses, Chinese- and English-taught programmes, tuition fees, scholarships and how to apply.

Shanghai University for International Students: Admission, Programmes and Tuition

Shanghai University (上海大学, SHU) is one of Shanghai's large comprehensive universities, admitting international students to bachelor's, master's, PhD and Chinese language programmes. It is supported by the national Double First-Class Initiative and has more than 2,500 international students from over 160 countries and regions. Here is what the university is strong in, what it costs and how to apply. For life in the city and other universities there, see our Shanghai study guide.

Key facts

• Shanghai University was founded in 1922 and is supported by the Double First-Class Initiative.

• 38,000+ students, including 2,500+ international students from 160+ countries and regions.

• Strongest fields: materials science, chemistry and engineering — in the top 1‰ of ESI.

• Bachelor's tuition: RMB 21,000–32,000 a year for Chinese-taught and RMB 30,000 for English-taught programmes.

• Bachelor's applicants need the CSCA exam; Chinese-taught programmes require HSK.

Shanghai University is not SJTU or Fudan

Searches for "Shanghai university" often mix up three different universities. Shanghai University (上海大学, SHU) is an independent university with its main campus in Baoshan District. It is not Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and not Fudan University — they have their own websites, requirements and fees.

Double-check the university's English name in your documents and application: a mix-up can cost you a year.
